Whitefield, situated in the state of Karnataka, India, is a neighborhood of Bangalore with a rich history. Established in 1882 to serve as a settlement for the Eurasians and Anglo Indians of Bangalore, Whitefield remained a quaint enclave on the eastern periphery of Bangalore city until the late 1990s. The local IT boom during that period transformed it into a significant suburb, now integral to Greater Bangalore. Notably, Whitefield is Bengaluru’s pioneering tech corridor linked by Namma Metro.

The locality derives its name from David Emmanuel Starkenburgh White, the founder of the European and Anglo Indian Association, which received 4,000 acres of land from Mysore Maharaja Chamaraja Wodeyar in the 19th century.

Whitefield has witnessed a surge in residential construction since the latter half of the 1990s, particularly from 2002 onward. Two major four-lane roads connect Bangalore city with Whitefield — Whitefield Road via Mahadevapura and Varthur Road (HAL Old Airport Road) via Marathahalli. Both roads intersect with Karnataka State Highway 35 (SH 35), running north–south from Siddlaghatta in the north to Anekal in the south.

The Whitefield railway station, approximately 3 km north of the Whitefield Bus stop, lies on the Bangalore-Chennai route. It is double and electrified, with plans to convert the Krishnarajapuram-Whitefield railway station section to a quadruple line. The station is set to become a junction with the addition of a new Whitefield-Kolar (53 km; 33 miles) line. Adjacent to the Whitefield railway station is Brindavan, the ashram and winter residence of the Hindu spiritual leader Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba.

Notably, the Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) has a large inland container depot near ITPB, just off Whitefield Road. The area is home to several shopping malls, including Nexus Whitefield (formerly The Forum Neighborhood Mall), Phoenix Market City, VR Bengaluru, Ascendas Park Square Mall, and Nexus Shantiniketan Mall. Additionally, it hosts renowned super-specialty hospitals like Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Whitefield, and Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre.
